I have known fear in many forms over the course of my life. I've stood in rooms that didn't want me there, felt the weight of something watching from the dark, heard sounds that had no earthly source. But for a period of my life, the thing I feared most wasn't paranormal at all. It was a man — controlling, unpredictable, the kind of dangerous that wears a human face and hides itself in small apartments and raised voices and closed doors.
I told myself I could handle it. I had survived worse. What I didn't anticipate was that something else was paying attention.
The activity started subtly, the way it often does. Lights that flickered specifically when his temper rose. Objects that had been in the same place for years, moved — not by me. A cold that settled into rooms he entered, the kind of cold I recognized from years of field investigation: dense, pressurized, intentional.
My hitchhiker — the entity that has followed me since childhood, across homes and state lines and decades of my life — was making itself known in a way I had never quite seen before. It wasn't interested in me that night. It was watching him.
The night he left, something happened that I have no rational explanation for. He was in the next room. I heard him go still — not quiet, but still, the way people go still when something has stopped the air in their lungs. He came to the doorway, his face a color I had never seen on a living person.
He didn't explain. He packed a bag. He said almost nothing. Within two days, he was gone entirely — out of the apartment, out of my life, not a word since.
Whatever he saw in that room, he never told me. He never came back to ask about it either.
I have spent years asking the same question that titles this memoir: friend or foe? The entity that has followed me is not gentle. It is not a comfort. There are encounters I have had with it that I still cannot speak about without my hands shaking.
But that night, I think — I believe — it was on my side. It saw something I was too close to see clearly, and it acted. Whether that makes it a guardian or simply a predator with its own agenda, I honestly cannot say.
But I am here. And he is not.
